Young children among critically injured in Fairfax County house fire

Firefighters rescued two trapped people from the home. Neighbors say they were young children.

CLIFTON, Va. — Five people were taken to area hospitals after a fire in a home in Fairfax County on Wednesday morning. Two of them were in critical condition.

Crews were called to the 13900 block of Whetstone Manor Court in Clifton around 9:30 a.m., Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said.

When they arrived, they found a home with heavy fire and reports of two people trapped inside. Crews called for a second alarm to get more units to the scene.

Fairfax County firefighters said on social media that the two people were removed from the home. They had critical injuries. The other three who were sent to the hospital had injuries that weren't life-threatening, fire officials said.

Fire officials would not comment on the ages of the victims, but neighbors told WUSA9 that children were among the injured.

The two critically hurt were kids who had to be rescued by the stairs on the second floor of the house, according to 911 dispatch audio.

"It's very scary," neighbor Alan Walker said. "My daughter called me crying because she came by and saw them doing CPR on one of the kids."

Multiple residents in the community said the house belongs to the Brice family: four children, their two parents and two grandparents.

Nishit Sahay said he drove up to the scene to see the grandparents calling for help.

"They were very scared and terrified," Sahay said. "I saw them getting into the ambulance because they had fire bruises trying to save the children inside."

A verified GoFundMe page raising money to support the Brice family said the two youngest kids were air lifted to the Children's Hospital in D.C. with severe smoke inhalation.

"They have four kids and the dad takes them for walks and they come with their dogs almost every day," neighbor Raj Sinha told WUSA9. "I'm still trying to wrap my head around it because I've lived here for almost 28 years and they've been here for a long time too, so it's really hard."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It's unknown where the fire started but scanner audio from the incident said there was a fire in the kitchen.

Additional details were not immediately available.
