Woman dials 911 moments before being killed by ex-boyfriend outside of her job, police say

The shooting happened in the 3200 block of Woodburn Road – near the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.

ANNANDALE, Va. — A woman was killed in an apparent domestic-related shooting in Annandale on Friday afternoon, the Fairfax County Police Department said.

The shooting happened in the 3200 block of Woodburn Road – near the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.

During a press conference, police said the victim was an employee at the medical campus. They believe she was leaving work for the day and entered her car when her ex-boyfriend appeared and blocked her in. Police say the suspect opened fire while she was on the phone with dispatchers.

He reportedly fled the scene immediately after. The woman was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police used surveillance footage to get the license plates from the car used by the suspect to flee. CCTV cameras captured the plates entering Maryland. Fairfax County Police reached out to Prince George's County Police to coordinate the apprehension of the suspect.

During this time, Fairfax County Police began a preliminary investigation and found that the victim had a temporary restraining order in effect against the suspect during the time of the shooting. While the identities of the suspect and victim have not been released, police do say they look to be in their 30s.

Prince George's County Police say officers located a firearm in the car when they arrested the suspect. Investigators will begin testing the gun to see if it matches the one used in Friday's shooting. Detectives from PGPD and FCPD will collaborate to determine when the couple split, why the temporary restraining order was issued, and if there have been other situations like this in the past since both couples reside in Maryland.
