MARYLAND, USA — Maryland’s Republican Gov. Larry Hogan appears to be testing the waters to run for president of the United States. The governor himself is doing little to quiet the chatter, and his Thursday tweets from the Iowa State Fair only reinforced the notion.
Hogan’s Lt. Governor, Boyd Rutherford, added fuel to the political fire by speculating on a Baltimore radio program that Hogan could run as an Independent. During an appearance on WBAL radio in Baltimore Wednesday Rutherford talked about Hogan's future.
"We could see an Independent candidate possibly with the initials 'L.H.' for president in a couple of years," Rutherford said.
While in Iowa, Hogan was asked about possible presidential ambitions during a radio appearance with conservative host Hew Hewitt Thursday. Hogan acknowledged his campaign-like appearance in Iowa and did not say "no."
"I'm not going to even talk about the future or figure out what I'm going to do until next year," Hogan responded. "I think we have to see what happens in the 2022 election first."
Hewitt quipped that Hogan's trip to Iowa "tells us volumes about where you'll be in 2025."
Hogan chuckled in the background.
Hogan has been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump and has called the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate for governor in Maryland, Dan Cox, a “Q-Anon whack job."
