WASHINGTON — Officials with DC Public Schools (DCPS) say an assistant principal is no longer employed within the school system after an investigation uncovered that he was working a second full-time job as a principal of another school in Rhode Island. Michael Redmond admitted to working both jobs concurrently -- virtually for DCPS and in-person for Providence Public Schools -- for more than four months.
According to a Notice of Violation from the Government of the District of Columbia Board of Ethics and Government Accountability, Redmond is accused of violating the District Code of Conduct.
The Ethics Board says Redmond had been an employee with the district since 2014. He worked as the assistant principal at Kramer Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year and part of the 2020-2021 school year.
Redmond's salary as assistant principal at Kramer Middle School was more than $125,000 a year. The Ethics Board says Redmond started working as principal of Providence Public Schools’ E Cubed Academy in Providence, Rhode Island on July 22, 2020, while he was still employed with DCPS.
In a July 28, 2020 Facebook post, Providence Public Schools welcomed Redmond to the district.
"Michael Redmond comes to Providence from Washington D.C. where he served as a school leader and turnaround specialist," reads the Facebook post. "Most recently, while an assistant principal at Kramer Middle School, his school outperformed the district by 23 percentage points in sixth-grade mathematics."
In a statement from DCPS, school officials say they first became aware of Redmond's second job in the fall of 2020.
"Consistent with our protocols, we immediately began an investigation and reported the allegation to D.C.’s Board of Ethics and Government Accountability for investigation."
The Ethics Board claims Redmond has admitted to working the second full-time job while still working for DCPS from July 22, 2020, through Nov. 30, 2020, when he resigned from DCPS.
Redmond was required to work weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. at Providence Public Schools, while simultaneously being required to work from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. for DCPS.
The Ethics Board says Redmond was paid around $41,000 in DCPS wages while working both jobs.
