BEL AIR, Md. — A 78-year-old man who withdrew large sums of money from a bank in Maryland was the victim of a home invasion by one of the bank's tellers Nov. 11, police said.
Authorities said that they responded to the 1800 block of Still Pond Way in Bel Air, Maryland for a potential burglary around 8:30 p.m. Nov. 11. Once at the scene, deputies were informed that an unknown male rang the doorbell and forced his way into the home and began assaulting the 78-year-old male resident who opened the door until a second resident, a 57-year-old female, intervened.
Police said the suspect then fled upstairs while the assaulted victim went to a house nearby to call the police.
Both residents suffered injuries from the incident, one of whom was taken to John Hopkins Bayview Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The 78-year-old was treated for a bruised orbital area, two loose teeth and heart issues after the attack.
Authorities weren't able to locate the suspect Nov. 11, but with the help of detectives from Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and physical evidence collected at the scene, they were able to determine that the bank's teller, Nathan Michael Newell, was the suspect.
Police said that Newell worked as a teller at the Freedom Federal Credit Union in Fountain Green, Maryland and was arrested at the bank Nov. 13.
Newell has since been charged with home invasion, robbery, first and third-degree burglary, and first and second-degree assault. He was transported to the Harford County Detention Center, where he is currently being held without bail.
