Metro Alert: all but two lines slowed this weekend, Yellow Line cut off

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel emphasized that free shuttle service is “not necessary” during this shutdown, adding that “taking a bus would take longer than simply taking the Blue Line train.”

WASHINGTON — Metro riders on all but two lines will face weekend track work, slower trains and in one case no trains without the usual workarounds.

The Yellow Line is closed beyond National Airport into D.C. and Virginia. Making matters more complicated, there is no shuttle bus service to bypass the shutdown—the norm for a closure such as this.

Metro said Yellow Line trains are still running on regular, 15-minute intervals between Huntington and National Airport only. It says riders can also take the Blue Line instead.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel emphasized that free shuttle service is “not necessary” during this shutdown, adding that “taking a bus would take longer than simply taking the Blue Line train.”

The Yellow Line has been the focus of work for some time. In November, the crucial Yellow Line bridge over the Potomac River was closed for 14 days while crews did a major overhaul of rail infrastructure.

This time, crews are installing a new radio system on the bridge as well as adding cables and communications equipment to support cell service in nearby tunnels.

There is also weekend track work on the Red, Orange, and Green lines causing trains to arrive slower than usual.
