Dumpsters and fires: Dirty campaign tricks in Montgomery County races

Campaign signs ripped and burned. And a competitor's materials tossed in the trash.

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Two races in Montgomery County are heating up – literally. Campaign signs were burned and a campaign worker was fired for trashing the competitor’s literature.

Someone sent a video to WUSA9 reporter Delia Goncalves that showed a sign for Democrat David Trone on fire on the side of a road. The Trone campaign managers said they've seen a spike in vandalism, but no culprits have been found.

There's also been some dirty campaign tricks in the Maryland House of Delegates Race in District 20 in the Silver Spring area. This time, a campaign worker was caught on camera.

Surveillance video showed three members of District 20 drop off campaign material in a storage area at the Silver Spring Civic Center. Seconds later, a man walked in. We are not identifying him because he nor his boss has reached back to us.

The video showed the man peering over at the competitor’s campaign literature. He looked around to see if someone was coming and even looked up towards the surveillance camera.

He apparently thought he was in the clear because he snatched the box, headed out back and tossed the campaign material in the dumpster.

Once the video got out, his boss apparently tossed him out.

Candidate Darian Unger posted on his Facebook page, "I fired him immediately." Unger called the behavior "counter to my values and the values of the other candidates, whose efforts I respect tremendously.”
