DC 3rd graders win art contest, get to ride along in recycling truck

WASHINGTON -- Two third graders from the District got the chance to ride along with a recycling truck after winning an art and essay contest.

The students, Sanai Miles and Julian Coleman, who both attend John Burroughs Elementary School won an art and essay contest on why recycling is important. The contest was organized by the Department of Public Works.

DPW said that the their parents and the two students took turns riding along with the truck through the neighborhood where their school is located.

“I’m very proud of the students here at Burroughs Elementary and their passion for the environment,” said DPW Director Chris Shorter. “As Mayor Bowser likes to say, fighting climate change is a D.C. value. To see these students committed to recycling and composting at such an early age is very encouraging.”

The art and essay contest was part of a campaign focused on increasing the amount of material recycled in D.C. and informing people on the do's and don'ts.
