PGCPS to undergo second review

According to the Washington Post, The State Board of Education voted to rehire Alvarez & Marsal, a D.C-based firm, to examine records for the Class of 2018.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – A second and longer review of graduation-related issues within the Prince George’s County Public School System (PGCPS) is being planned by Maryland education officials.

According to the Washington Post, The State Board of Education voted to rehire Alvarez & Marsal, a D.C-based firm, to examine records for the Class of 2018.

When the contract is finalized, the firm will look into practices involving attendance, grade changes, course makeup work, records access and graduation.

The new audit is expected to last six months, far longer than the review last year.

The first audit, ordered by the governor, revealed that more than 30 percent of the county’s 2016-2017 graduates graduated without meeting state requirements. More than 5,000 students had their grades changed.

The audit also found there was no documentation to explain why the grades changed.

The news comes just three weeks after Dr. Kevin Maxwell, the school system’s CEO, announced he will not be returning next school year.
