Police search for armed suspect after Baltimore Co. officer was fatally injured

Authorities were advising motorists to avoid the area and residents to shelter in place while the hunt for the suspect continued.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD -- Police are searching for at least one armed suspect after a Baltimore County police officer was fatally injured.

Baltimore County police say the search for a suspects or suspects in the death of a veteran female officer will continue through the night hours.

Police Cpl. Shawn Vinson said at a news briefing Monday evening that canine units and aviation units are part of the extensive manhunt that is continuing in and around a suburban Baltimore community where the office was fatally injured. The police spokesman says, "The dark will not hamper our investigation."

Witnesses reported hearing a pop and seeing the officer run over by a Jeep Monday afternoon. The officer, who wasn't immediately identified, was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Vinson says officers recovered the suspects' Jeep, found ditched on a road. He wouldn't say if the vehicle might have been used to injure the officer, only that it was involved in the overall crime.

Authorities say a Baltimore County police officer who was fatally injured while investigating a suspicious vehicle had been on the force for almost four years.

Police spokesman Shawn Vinson says state and federal law enforcers are searching for multiple suspects.

Volunteer firefighter Logan Kurek said he ran outside and performed CPR on the officer until paramedics arrived, and says her injuries were consistent with being run over by a car.

Vinson said the officer was critically injured about 2 p.m. Monday, but police could not immediately confirm whether she was shot or run over by a vehicle.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan originally confirmed the death of the officer who was shot while investigating a suspicious vehicle.

Baltimore County authorities said police are searching for at least one armed suspect.

Police spokeswoman Julia Hardgrove said the officer had been investigating a suspicious vehicle on Linwen Way in the community of Perry Hall.

Hogan says "we're deeply saddened" that the "brave officer" was shot in the line of duty.

Authorities were advising motorists to avoid the area and residents to shelter in place while the hunt for the suspect continued.

Students at three local elementary schools were not being dismissed but were instead being held over on alert status because of police activity. Parents were told to contact school administrators for further instructions.
