Stranger's kindness helps reunite former DC officer with lost class ring

The two say they plan on keeping in touch and staying friends.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — A former D.C. police officer had a priceless ring returned to her thanks to a persistent stranger.

Officer Cheryl Essex was touring the Washington Monument over a year ago when she took off her 1985 Knoxville College ring off to put in her backpack. The ring instead fell on the ground.

It was picked up by Emily Henshall, a D.C. school secretary who just knew she needed to find the owner. So Henshall got to work, posting news of the lost ring of 27 different listservers that reach folks in the D.C. communities.

Officer Essex's former sergeant saw one of the posts and that's how Essex and Henshall got in contact with one another.

On Tuesday, Henshall was able to give Officer Essex her precious ring, which she wears every day in addition to her wedding ring and Metropolitan Police ring.

Officer Essex worked for D.C. police for 25 years before retiring.

"You said 'I found your ring', I said 'really?!' I thought I'd never find it, I lost that over a year ago," said Officer Essex.

The two say they plan on keeping in touch and staying friends.
