LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (WUSA9) — WUSA9’s own Special Assignment Unit Reporter Andrea McCarren has been named Loudoun Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year.

McCarren, along with her photojournalist Stewie Mullen, released a report in 2017 that revealed the plight of homeless veterans in the DC area. They revealed how even veterans who are able to get housing through the VA don’t have any furniture or critical household supplies.

Just days after the report aired, McCarren, WUASA9, and the Elks teamed up to host a furniture drive, which helped to provide furniture, bedding, kitchen appliances, and much more to over 40 veterans and their families.

Nigel, her Canine Companions for Independence service dog in training, accompanied her to the ceremony on Saturday. Congratulations to Andrea!

The Elks Lodge is still collecting furniture for homeless veterans. You can find out more here.
